What is it that makes an athletic competition sexual? For the ancient Amazons there was no difference at all. For them, any kind of physical test of strength was equally worthwhile to determine the stronger of two women. Whether it was wrestling or tribadic fighting, one of the two would prove her superiority. Also, since wrestling matches were usually fought naked or at least lightly clothed, one thing could very easily lead to another, so that a sexual contest was the logical consequence of an athletic match. And in Amazonian culture, it was considered most cowardly to refuse such a challenge, since sex was synonymous with one's strength and power over others.
